they tied the knot

I needed to make a card to go with a wedding gift. Of course, I went on pinterest and found lots of cute ideas. The one I picked to replicate was of two spools of thread, one pink and one blue, tied together with a bow. At first I saw the card and thought, "Oh cute! Two spools of thread- pink thread for the girl and blue thread for the boy. Oh wait, they tied the knot!" Maybe it didn't take you as long as it did for me.

This card was so easy to make. I cut two little spool shapes out of a thin cardboard (actually the thin pieces of board from in between cans of cat food we get or the piece from the back of a package of cardstock). I put a little bit of craft glue on one side of the spool and started wrapping the thread around, leaving a tail at the end to tie the knot. I repeated those steps for the other spool.
I took the two tail ends and carefully made a bow. With hot glue, I tacked the spools on my card. I used some craft glue to keep the bow in place. I trimmed the ends of the bow to make them even and tacked those with a dot of glue, too.
To frame the spools, I just drew two brackets with hearts in the middle. Voila!

Part of the wedding gift we're giving is a cast iron handle cover. I found this pattern on www.ravelry.com. The pattern is called, "Crocheted Cast Iron Handle Covers" by Rene' Catron. (How clever!) It's a free pattern and pretty quick to make. We use our cast iron skillets and/or griddle everyday, so we use our handle covers a lot. I'm getting to the age where I only want to give things that are practical. I do love decorative things, but when something is needed and used it is really appreciated. Ok, I'm officially old.
